Cacti & Other Works: Creating a Living Desert Landscape
Located in Southern California, my HO scale model features a Southern Pacific train order office set against a desert backdrop. To enhance the arid scene, I sought realistic desert plants, specifically palm trees and cacti. While I found satisfactory artificial palm trees, the available artificial cacti lacked realism. Instead of scratchbuilding, I opted to wait for a suitable manufactured option.
In spring 2002, inspiration struck when I observed that the sprouts from our cactus houseplants were appropriately sized for HO scale. With assistance from my wife Cheryl, a skilled gardener, I developed a method to landscape my layout using live cactus plants. I selected two varieties that would thrive without rapidly outgrowing the scale: Christmas tree opuntia and rhipsalis capilliformis.
Transplanting involved cutting ? to 1? sprouts and using 35mm film canisters as pots. After preparing the canisters with soil and water, I placed the sprouts inside and allowed them to acclimate for ten days. Once established, I created holes in the Styrofoam base to integrate the cacti into my layout seamlessly. These slow-growing plants require minimal maintenance and can thrive in various conditions, making them ideal for my living landscape.
